It all started when I got an email from Point 8 Forum Pecha Kucha Charlotte. It was an invitation of sorts to submit to be a presenter. (If you're wondering what Pecha Kucha is check this out: http://www.pecha-kucha.org/)

Charlotte has been hosting Pecha Kucha for a year (I think!?) I've only had the pleasure of attending one of them. I was thrilled to see so many interesting and creative people that live in my city turn out and mingle. I wondered at the time what the possibility of me presenting would look like. I envisioned it in totality, but I didn't have any idea how long it would take me to accomplish it. I still don't know, but I'm ready to submit an entry.

So on to the reason for this post, which is the question, 'What inspires me?".

Today I saw one thing that has inspired me many times in the past. It's a duck crossing sign. For real, it's official. But, someone (who I can only image is brilliant) took the time to put a decal on it that makes it look like the duck is hula hooping!

Franz Ferdinand. http://www.franzferdinand.co.uk/ They inspire me, yes they do.

People who are willing to risk losing everything to be true to themselves inspire me.

Single Moms inspire me. I can't even imagine how hard that must be. Even though I'm divorced and technically 'single', my son's father is active in his life so that allows me time for myself. I'm talking about the Mom's who do it by themselves 100% of the time and still manage to stay sane, upright and moving forward. God Bless them.

Har Mar Superstar inspires me http://harmarsuperstar.com/

My son inspires me beyond measure.

Beautiful words inspire me, here is one of my favorite poems:

We Have Come to be Danced by Jewel Mathieson

We have come to be danced

Not the pretty dance Not the pretty pretty, pick me, pick me dance

But the claw our way back into the belly Of the sacred, sensual animal dance

The unhinged, unplugged, cat is out of its box dance

The holding the precious moment in the palms Of our hands and feet dance.

We have come to be danced Not the jiffy booby, shake your booty for him dance But the wring the sadness from our skin dance The blow the chip off our shoulder dance. The slap the apology from our posture dance.

We have come to be danced Not the monkey see, monkey do dance One two dance like you One two three, dance like me dance but the grave robber, tomb stalker Tearing scabs and scars open dance The rub the rhythm raw against our soul dance.

We have come to be danced Not the nice, invisible, self-conscious shuffle But the matted hair flying, voodoo mama Shaman shakin’ ancient bones dance The strip us from our casings, return our wings Sharpen our claws and tongues dance The shed dead cells and slip into The luminous skin of love dance.

We have come to be danced Not the hold our breath and wallow in the shallow end of the floor dance But the meeting of the trinity, the body breath and beat dance The shout hallelujah from the top of our thighs dance The mother may I? Yes you may take 10 giant leaps dance The olly olly oxen free free free dance The everyone can come to our heaven dance.

We have come to be danced Where the kingdom’s collide In the cathedral of flesh To burn back into the light To unravel, to play, to fly, to pray To root in skin sanctuary We have come to be danced --WE HAVE COME.

-by Jewel Mathieson

All of the people who make the Opulent Temple at BRC possible, and the people who come there to be danced inspire me the most.
Long Live the Opulent Temple!

Bowling

OK, I have several jobs in addition to being the fur hat queen.

One of them is working for a local catering company called
'Something Classic Catering' I love this job because I love the people I work with, the food we serve and the ladies who own the company.

Last night our company owners hosted us (the employees) to a bowling party at George Pappas Park Lanes which is likely the oldest bowling alley in Charlotte. This place is wonderful and reminds me so much of the places I used to go to in Michigan with my Dad who was an expert bowler. He reminded me of Fred Flinstone in his preparation to throw but instead of the tippy-toes, he would do a move much like the Karate Kid standing on the pole.
I took my four year old son Nathan and we had a blast. I actually won one round and also broke 100 which is always my goal. Nathan had a blast too, it was so funny to watch him struggle up to the line with his 8 lb. ball grasped tightly to his chest and drop it. Then sit and wait the 30+ seconds it takes to get to the pins with the ball going 3 miles per hour! The best part was the bumpers that come up when it's his turn so he doesn't have to endure the dreaded gutterball!

Anyhow it was a blast hanging with the co-workers and I'm so grateful for the treat of free bowling! Thanks to Jill and Karen and Something Classic!

A note about Valentine's Day

OK, OK I am a known cynic about Valentine's Day...so why the special!?

Well, I could make up a bunch of stuff about how although it is an over commercialized holiday which makes people who are single feel like crap, it can also be a reminder to tell the ones you love how much they mean to you.

But, the truth is that I thought the free shipping thing would generate some flurry of orders in a usually quiet time.

It's so weird how the universe operates, a few weeks ago I experienced a series of what I would call personal set-backs. (I don't see this as a forum to vent my troubles so 'nuff said on that!)

Anyhoo, I had several orders in at the same time, not only that, they were hot and were needed quickly. I've been making these hats for over 5 years and I've made hundreds of them. I have never once in my life had such trouble getting the job done! In a word I failed. I got them out late and my customers missed important events to which they wanted to wear them!! Needless to say, I did my best to make it up by giving them some money back but that was small comfort.

Now that I'm through the storm so to speak and the clouds are clearing...biz is very slow. Not that it would bother me really but my other work is slow too. What to do? Well, put on a Valentine's day promotion of course!!!

Ok so now with that said, if you're looking for the perfect Valentine's Day gift and you've already ordered one of my hats for the fun loving weirdo in your life, but still need a gift for the loved one who wouldn't be caught dead in a faux fur hat, who also happens to be curious about human consciousness and the evolution of our species, I recommend the book 'The Seat of the Soul' by Gary Zukov.

I can't believe it was written in 1989 and I'm just now reading it. Zukov has a way of explaining the facts better than anyone I've seen yet, and trust me, I've seen and read a lot.

Anyhow, if you made it this far, I absolutely LOVE you.

Smooches and Happy, Happy Valentine's Day to YOU!!!
Ms Presto

Universal Lovers of Faux Fur Hats Unite!

I haven't blogged in a million zillion years.

I finally had to because a really hip, cool, and
obviously intelligent person in France just
bought one of my hats. Another thing this order means to me is that I can, and am, earning a living doing what I love.

Although I don't have the entire story as to how the hats will be used, and I don't want to let the cat out of the bag prematurely, I do understand that the promotion will be running in more than one country.

In the mean time, I'm knee deep in baby blue fur and fleece and there's no place I'd rather be!

So far my hats have made it to Great Britain, United Arab Emirates, Poland and now Hungary. But more incredible was the work leading up to it.

I got over 60 orders from being posted on the JRS resource list on July 11th. It was so great having so many burners excitedly supporting my business. It was my gift and pleasure to make all those hats in preparation for the soul expanding experience that is Burning Man.

But it did wear me out!! Next year I hope to have some assistance! I was surprised that I only ran into a few people in Black Rock City (outside of my camp) who had bought my hats. And even though I prepared a list of people I had corresponded with and noted where they were camping, I'm sad to say, I got out to see none of them!! Oh gosh...there just aren't enough hours in the day or night when I'm there! And this was definitely the most fleeting week to date...I think it was the weather.

The dust storms were so incredible this year. Although, I have to note here that even though most everyone I knew parked their bikes saying the sand was too deep....I didn't have to because I have the BEST BIKE on the playa! thank you to Nage for covering the seat with hot pink luxe fur!! It even matched my camel back!!

It has taken me some time to recover from my busy summer and from Burning Man and I'm starting to feel normal again. Big changes are occurring in my personal life but I know it is because my soul has asked for these lessons so I am approaching them with grace.

Now I gotta go pick up my pets Bianca and Thomas at the vet. Thanks to everyone who ordered hats this week, I'm especially excited about my first customer in Poland! Thank You Jola, I hope your hat gets there soon!

Gifts from Nature

I just received the coolest gift!

I was sewing and my dog was whining by the window, I stood up (not sure why, I usually ignore this as she is always noting walkers) and to my amazement there were three young buck deer in my front yard!!

Deer are common in my neighborhood but one rarely sees them during the day.

As I crept up to the window to get a closer look they decided to move on, but one, the youngest one by the looks of his antlers, paused for a moment and looked right at me.

I had to blog about this because I also got to see a hummingbird this morning. I just happened to turn toward my window to unplug my phone charger and got to see it feasting on the lantana.

I'm so grateful for these sightings, my heart is very heavy right now as my personal life is in dramatic transition and getting to witness this beauty is a reminder to me that everything is going to be alright.

-MP

Opulent Temple Schedule has been posted....

Check it:
http://www.opulenttemple.org/

Dj's I won't be missing are:

Syd Gris, Smoove, Lee Coombs (playin' on my birthday, yo!)
and Carl Cox

If you haven't been to the Opulent Temple you're in for a treat. Where in the world does the time go? So much to do, the only way I can keep from being overwhelmed is to say my mantra: "There is time and space to do all I need to do, my needs are met!" You think that's silly!? Well, it works.

My friend Theresa said she was so overwhelmed by her upcoming elopement arrangements she decided to treat it like a second job.

GREAT Advice!

I've decided to do this with my Burning Man preparations! It's the only way to fit in all that needs to be done and still maintain the rest of the crazy busy stuff that is going on in my life.

Tops on my list:
-Finish putting new art on the shade structure panel and get it shipped back to Nage
-Clean out my tent!
-Start Packin'! Lots of fun stuff here:
http://www.babygirlboutique.com/leg-9037c.html

I got some cool glowy hair clips from this site, and this gal makes incredible wings and beautiful and unique hats: http://www.artofwings.com/

My favorite place to buy funky platforms is: http://www.electriqueboutique.com/ these are the best prices I've found on the internet and holy moly what a selection!

They also carry some great goggles and sunglasses for cheap! And awesome costume wigs too (if you're partial to gigantic 18th century wigs, that is!) Man, I want that wig bad!! ...next year

Do you like dread falls? I used this tutorial a few years ago to make some for myself:
http://www.angelfire.com/freak2/rovingtutorial/1.htm
You can get the wool roving at this link that is pre-dyed, there's a great selection and the prices are good and customer service is great.
http://bluegooseglen.home.att.net/fibers.htm?gclid=CKLE1OKC3pQCFReenAodIim-SQ
I really like using the wool because the dreads look real and they're lightweight. It takes forever though! I made some for myself and then realized why people charge $150.00 for them! I wouldn't do it again for less than $250.00!!! The first year I made them I spent so much time on 'em that by the time I was packing for the playa I didn't even wanna look at them!! Heck, I didn't even bring 'em! But I did finally wear them for Halloween last year.

Oh, and of course I have to include another great hat link:

http://www.uniformalwearhouse.com/apages/tuxedoahats.html

Now, if you've made it this far I'm going to shamelessly plug my other playa wear site which is only an Etsy store but it works! http://www.playafied.com/

I've got a few interesting things there.

Well, I know I got more links somewhere, but that'll do for now, I'm hungry.

Ciao for now!

-Ms Presto

Dreams about Burning Man

For me they all have the same nightmarish theme... This morning I awoke with the most palpable dread, with my heart sinking in my chest as I realized (in my dream) that I arrived at the Reno Airport and I had forgotten to check my luggage and I wouldn't have anything to camp with, or worse even still, to wear at Burning Man!!!

Too funny. I'm so used to the dreams I now wake up and say to myself immediately, its only a dream...it didn't really happen. It's gonna be OK, there's still time.

This may sound extremely silly to some people, but if there is one thing that comes into play at Burning Man it's survival, if you're not prepared you could have a rotten time or worse yet, die. And if you don't have the proper fashions, well, my opinion is, why bother!?

Am I being mellow dramatic!? No, there is a reason the tickets say that the Burning Man Organization is not responsible for death or bodily injury.

Oh, that just made me think of one of my favorite art cars from 2003, it had swings on it and they would spin slowly (like a whirling dervish ride) and you had to run along side it and jump on a swing while it was moving. I guess you could wait 'til it stopped, but where's the fun in that!? My pal Jimmoi nearly tore his finger off on that one. Luckily he survived with no blood having been spilled, just pulled it badly. I gotta see if I got a pic of that somewhere.

Anyhoo, it is serious and I totally crack myself up with the crazy dreams I have of being unprepared. I've already had about 5 of them this year not including the one this morning. I would've thought that by now, in my 5th year of attending, this anxiety would decrease but it doesn't. I guess for me that's part of the fun; the challenge of the whole trip. The camping, the dealing with food and water and the whole survival aspect of it. Luckily, I have a killer tribe of people I camp with called Homeslice who have established a pretty darn cushy place to camp.

I also have a tremendously generous and wonderful friend named Reno Sassy who stores most of my gear in her shed! I couldn't do it without that. Thank you Sassy!

Well, that's it for now. If you got this far, thanks for stopping by.
-MP

Half price OLD STOCK sale!

I've changed my opinion . Now, don't start calling me a flip-flopper just because my thinking has evolved!

I used to be convinced that my hats had better lift and definition, and the lining stayed in place better by me sewing the fleece and the fur together in one seam. The downside is that the hat is not reversible because the top and side inside seams show. I used to be fine with it. I now make my hats with a hidden seam, the trade off is that the lining moves more...but now they are reversible. I guess life is full of trade-offs isn't it?

If you wanna see some of these sale hats go to my Etsy site: http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=85561

Note: all the feedback from customers on the Etsy site is about hats that are done in the old way, people loved 'em even though they weren't reversible.

Also check out my other Etsy site for playa gear I wanted to make but don't necessarily need for my personal playa fashion arsenal: http://www.playafied.com/

-MP

It's 4 a.m. again, and I'm awake but don't wanna be

OK. Can't sleep.
This happens often. I'm awakened usually by one of the various animals that lives in my house... And I can't get back to sleep.

The ole 'Monkey Mind' steps in and starts rattling and prattling on, sometimes its thoughts about the day, sometimes ideas for new things I want to make. There's never enough time to accomplish all I want to in the day.

I know I need to meditate more, and dance more, and exercise these are all things that can get that Monkey Mind under control. But, its so easy to let life get in the way.

When I got back from Burning Man last year I promised myself I was going to dance every day, even if it was just for a few minutes. Just to reconnect with my spirit, I find so much joy in dancing. I got so much great music last year as gifts. I danced so much at Burning Man last year that I was floating when I got home. But I haven't kept my promise, I haven't danced. I started out strong but even after a of weeks I wore down. There always seems to be something more pressing, a hat to be made, food to acquire and cook, (we can put a man on the moon, you mean to tell me that can't invent a pill you can eat once a day!!? c'mon!) a call to make, my sometimes grumpy and sometimes lovey little toddler Nathan needs a hug, or juice, or a clean diaper, or says 'sit mommy' and pats the couch like some 80 year old man. I can't resist that. Sometimes in his need to exercise some dominion over his life he commands that I cannot dance or sing around him. If you have been close to a toddler who is around the age of two and a half you will understand why I don't argue when he acts this way (nothing more futile than trying to reason with a toddler, distraction is always your best course of action!!) But I do sometimes dance or sing anyway and take a little pleasure in his heightened demand that I stop. It's just too funny, he looks like a little tyrant and he's so serious. Then of course I do stop so he won't get too worked up. He commits 100% to everything he does, including being contrary.

I decided when he was born that I would never decline his requests for cuddle time. Life is too short and I know when he grows up, he will likely go far and wide in the world and when I'm missing him I want to know in my heart I spent every minute I could getting to know him and letting him know he is the most important thing in the world to me.

But, I digress. Non sleep. That was the topic, and the calming of the Monkey Mind. I thought I would get up this time and write a little instead of laying in bed trying to sleep for the next couple of hours. Reading works too. I've got Andrew Harvey's The Way of Passion on hold at the library. I can't wait to read it. I was just listening to him the other day on a CD I have that is a rebroadcast from this radio show called 'New Dimensions' (which I love) we don't get it around here, but I sometimes catch it on my trips to Virginia. Anyhow, I ordered a wonderful 4 CD set with two interviews about Rumi by Coleman Barks and Andrew Harvey. They are brilliant. Rumi is brilliant. Love them.

I'm currently reading Your Immortal Soul by Gary Renard. It's OK so far, very much a rehash of his first book The Disappearance of the Universe. However, I'm only about 50 pages in. Of course I realize that authors always have to do that in case people didn't read the first one, and this information certainly can stand to be said and read multiple times. The Course in Miracles is a tough nut to crack, I know, I've been working on the text for almost a year and I haven't gotten very far. I'd like to begin the workbook when I get back from Burning Man where I'll be turning 40 (seems like a good time to begin something new!) but I really wanted to read the text first, and so far I got a ways to go. I find Gary's distillation of the message of the Course through his guides Arten and Pursah most helpful. I can still see however, that a mastery of this knowledge is a life time effort. Perhaps multiple life time effort!! Sheesh, I hope not!

Well, that's all I got right now. Perhaps getting these rambling thoughts out of my head will help me go back to sleep. I've got lots o' hats to make tomorrow. So thrilled about that, and the fact that my creations will be getting out into the world. My first order ever after my site went live was from LONDON!! I've never been to Europe (but that doesn't mean I'm not going!) but so far three hats I've made are living there and two more are on the way! Awesome. The web is an amazing thing.

Oh, I've been meaning to post the link to one of my Etsy stores that has some playa gear on it.
These are things I wanted to make but don't necessarily need for my playa wardrobe. It's www.playafied.com. I also have another Etsy store where I have discontinued styles of hats featured. http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=85561 Mostly discontinued because I had to narrow my line down to make it manageable on the site.

-MP out.

music to sew by

Artist: Brazilian Girls --- Album 'Talk to La Bomb'

love it.

MP

oh mannnnn. my email broke.

WoW! my site has been getting a lot of hits but I still got some bugs to work out.

Apparently my email address is down. phooey. My first website (www.wearwithattitude.com) has been launched and a dream that has been in my heart so long, that I can't remember how it got there, has come into being. That dream is to somehow use my artistic talents to create beautiful things that make people smile and support myself financially in the process.

The seed of the realization of this dream was planted in my heart in 2003 when I made my first trip to Burning Man. It was the first time in my life that I felt like I truly fit in, I felt like I had found my people, and that I actually did belong on this planet!! And through the journey of attending Burning Man over the past five years, I've found a community that wants what I have to offer, and would be delighted to have it. Thank you Burners!!

But before I go any further talking about all that, I have to Thank the people who helped me get to this wonderful day.

First and foremost, I have to thank my number one set of believing eyes, my beloved friend and father of my child, Wes Grasty, who has believed in me and encouraged me for so many years. I just simply could not have achieved any of this without his love and support. It also happens that he is an awesome Daddy and has mad Internet skills to boot! (www.customer-e-service.com & www.petpossibilities.com)

Secondly, there are the amazingly creative people in my life who have lent their talent to help me manifest my amazing site, and make my dream a reality. They are:

John Howard of JohnSHoward.com who designed and built my site. He not only did it for free, but also made me feel like his best customer through the entire process, he's truly amazing and I really feel that angels sent him to me.

My dear friend of 20 years, and star photographer Jim McGuire (JimMcGuire.com) who always inspires me in the way he lives his life.

My friend Jade Wills (JadeMakeup.com) who possesses mad skills in bringing out the beauty of others, is a talented hooper and poi artist, and still has many, many unrealized talents...can't wait to see what is next for you Jade!

And then there's my long time friends Scott Cooper and Kristi Stanfill of (EvolutionMT.com) who not only have represented me as an actor, but also happen to respectively own, and help run, the coolest talent agency around! (EvolutionMT.com)

And of course there are the group of beautiful models who worked for me for free and did it with grace, high spirits and a wonderful sense of play!! My beautiful model friends: Michael, Lissette, Amber, Heather, Chloe, Lilly and Jade. You guys make my hats look so good!!

And then there are my star PR consultants Chai Guy, Shutter and my dear friend Elizabeth Malcolm who is an amazing producer, writer, therapist, director and, and, Liz you have too many talents for me to name here!! I thank you all for your advice and support!!

And finally I thank my dear, dear friends, family and Homeslice tribe, who have been my believing eyes through this entire journey!! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

O.K. Wow! Well I've got some orders to fill, so more blogging later!!

test

test
